Senator Stabenow to Receive Prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from Michigan League of Conservation Voters
Stabenow to Receive the Award at the 11th Annual Gala in Detroit
Friday, October 13, 2023DETROIT – Senator Debbie Stabenow will receive the Michigan League of Conservation Voters’ Lifetime Achievement Award for her commitment to protecting the Great Lakes, combatting the climate crisis, and leading Michigan into the clean energy future. This prestigious award is presented to a leader who is defending Michigan’s water and representing the interests of all Michiganders. The Michigan League of Conservation Voters will present the award at their 11th Annual Gala tonight, themed “Our Clean Energy Future.”
“The climate crisis is real and is having a serious impact on Michigan and our Great Lakes. That’s why I’ve dedicated my career to protecting our Lakes and ensuring our state has the tools to lead us into the clean energy future for our children and grandchildren,” said Senator Stabenow. “It’s an honor to receive this award from the Michigan League of Conservation Voters, who do so much to protect our Michigan way of life.”
Senator Stabenow has spent her life working for the people of Michigan and protecting our state’s Great Lakes, natural resources, and the Michigan way of life.
In 2010, Stabenow authored the bipartisan Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a flagship public-private program that has been a major success story. As the most significant investment ever made to restore and protect our Great Lakes, the initiative has provided more than $3.7 billion to protect the Great Lakes and its waterways against its greatest threats, and address problems that directly impact public health and safety.
Senator Stabenow secured the future of this program by enacting into law the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Act to renew the program for another five years and expand its investments. On top of this significant funding increase, she secured an additional $1 billion investment in the program over the next five years with the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This is the single-largest investment ever made in our Great Lakes.
Senator Stabenow led the effort to secure the largest ever federal investment in fighting the climate crisis with the Inflation Reduction Act. The law includes important tax credits authored by the Senator for battery manufacturing, solar manufacturing, electric vehicles, and other clean energy manufacturing. This law helps ensure that America – not China – will lead the way in the clean energy revolution. Senator Stabenow also secured investments in climate-smart agriculture practices, climate-smart forestry, and renewable energy resources for rural communities, farmers, and small businesses.
The Michigan League of Conservation Voters works to protect Michigan’s air, land, and water by holding accountable public officials who fight for an environment that sustains the health and well-being of us all.
