Saturday, March 23, 2024WASHINGTON—The U.S. Senate today passed a funding bill with significant wins for Michigan. Senator Stabenow led efforts to include investments in mental health and substance-use disorder services, child care and early learning programs, national defense, and key priorities for our local communities. This bill includes funding for several federal agencies including the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, State, and the legislative branch.
“I was laser-focused on securing important funding in this bill that will continue to invest in our families and national defense, and help communities in every region of our state. From providing critical mental health and substance-use disorder services, to lowering costs for families, and securing a well-earned pay raise for our services members, this bill makes significant investments in our families and their futures,”said Senator Stabenow.
Highlights of the bill include:
Mental Health and Substance-Use Disorder Services: $385 million in funding for Senator Stabenow’s signature Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics. This program is transforming the way we fund mental health and substance-use disorder treatment in this country. There are currently 41 clinics in Michigan and over 500 clinics funded across the country. The bill also includes $520 million for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Child Care and Early Learning Programs: The bill lowers child care costs for families and invests in Michigan children with $8.75 billion in funding for the Child Care and Development Block Grant and $12.3 billion for Head Start.
Addressing PFAS Contamination: The bill includes $5 million in funding for a health study on the impacts of PFAS exposure, which is critical to establishing stronger federal standards for PFAS. The bill also includes funding for cleanup of contaminated sites.
Pay Raise for Our Troops: The bill includes a 5.2% pay raise for our men and women in uniform.
Michigan Defense Industry: The bill includes critical funding for Michigan’s defense industry and makes important investments in our military families.
Priorities in Local Communities: The bill includes funding for local projects submitted to Senator Stabenow by local governments and community organizations across the state. These projects reflect the priorities of local communities and will support investments in infrastructure, water resources, health care, public safety, workforce development, jobs, education, and other community priorities.
