Senator Stabenow on President Biden’s Buy American Executive Order

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Debbie Stabenow released the following statement on President Biden’s Buy American Executive Order that reflects key components of her Buy American Agenda to strengthen American manufacturing and support American workers.

The President’s executive order provides more transparency around federal purchasing and increases American-made content requirements for products purchased by federal agencies to qualify as Made in America.” This is based on Senator Stabenow’s 2017 bill, the Make it in America Act, that included similar requirements and increased the American-made content from 50 to 75 percent.

In 2018, she released her Buy American report, that revealed waivers and loopholes in our nation’s Buy American laws that federal agencies used to issue over $92 billion in contracts to foreign companies between 2008-2016. President Biden’s policies address these waivers and loopholes and strengthen compliance with the Buy American Act. Also, Senator Stabenow passed an important amendment to require the Defense Department to provide more details on waivers that became law this year.

“I am so pleased that President Biden is making support for American manufacturers and workers a top priority during this challenging time. Our workers and manufacturers are the best in the world and this order ensures that they are first in line when it comes to government contracts and spending. It’s common sense that American tax dollars be used to create American jobs by purchasing American products, not products made overseas.

“I’m excited to see President Biden’s executive order builds on many of the policies I’ve proposed and I look forward to working together to make these permanent law.”
