Senator Stabenow Applauds Announcement of Construction Beginning on the M-1 Rail Project
Friday, June 27, 2014U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow today applauded the announcement that major construction on the M-1 Rail project will begin the week of July 28. M-1 Rail is a public-private partnership to build a 3.3-mile streetcar that will run along the Woodward corridor from downtown to the New Center area of Detroit, boosting economic development in Southeast Michigan and creating thousands of jobs.
"Today's announcement is great news for our economy and the future of Detroit," said Stabenow. "Getting the M-1 Rail up and running is just the beginning of a major economic boost for the region. The project will help attract new businesses and investment to Detroit and create thousands of new jobs. This public-private partnership is just one example of how local business and community leaders are investing in the future of Detroit."
Senator Stabenow helped secure federal funding for M-1 Rail and has worked closely with business and community leaders, philanthropic partners, Wayne State University and others on the project.
The 3.3-mile streetcar route will include 11 stations and provide links among key destinations along Woodward Avenue. It will also provide an energy efficient transportation alternative and reduce traffic congestion and parking demand along the corridor. A one-way trip will take approximately 15 minutes depending on the time of day.
