Senate Extends School and Summer Meals for Kids

Thursday, June 23, 2022

WASHINGTON – Today, the Senate unanimously extended important funding and flexibility for communities to provide children healthy meals this summer and provide support to schools and daycare providers to respond to supply chain challenges and high food costs for the coming school year. The Keep Kids Fed Act was announced by Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Ranking Member John Boozman (R-AR), along with House Committee on Education and Labor Chairman Bobby Scott (D-VA 03) and Ranking Member Virginia Foxx (R NC-5). It will now go to the House for final passage.

“Schools and parents can rest easy knowing that help is on the way so kids can continue getting school and summer meals,” said Senator Stabenow. “Congress is making sure school and summer meal programs get much-needed support to deal with ongoing food service issues and keep kids fed. I look forward to the President signing this into law.”

“The Senate’s action today will ensure kids have access to healthful, nutritious meals this upcoming school year and in the summer months without putting an additional burden on taxpayers. It is welcome news for school administrators, who continue to grapple with rising food prices and supply chain issues, as well as parents, who face similar challenges at home and have found themselves in a state of uncertainty with this looming deadline. It is temporary, targeted relief that should be signed as soon as it reaches the President’s desk,” said Senator Boozman.
