Stabenow, Levin Announce $200,000 Brownfield Grant for Lincoln Park

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Carl Levin (D-MI) announced today that Lincoln Park, MI will receive $200,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfield Hazardous Substances Assessment Program grants through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  This award will provide the city of Lincoln Park with stimulus funding to conduct assessments of potential brownfield sites potentially contaminated with hazardous substances.

“This grant will allow the city of Lincoln Park to further their environmental rehabilitation efforts,” Stabenow said. “Not only will Lincoln Park become better equipped to protect its residents from environmental hazards, it will also create jobs and be able to encourage reinvestment of Brownfield sites and blighted areas.”

“This brownfield grant will help Lincoln Park efficiently turn around contaminated properties and put them to productive use,” said Levin. “This federal funding will help prioritize the community’s efforts, create jobs and improve the local environment.”

The EPA Brownfield Hazardous Substances Assessment Program has been in existence since 1993, when it was established by the Clinton administration. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act was passed to give EPA specific statutory authority to address brownfields, and to help states and communities around the country cleanup and revitalize these sites, where expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
