Stabenow, Levin: Senate Approves $5 Million in Critical Funding for Michigan

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Carl Levin (D-MI) today announced the inclusion of $5 million for Michigan projects in the FY2010 appropriations bill for Commerce, Justice and Science, which the Senate passed today. The bill includes a total of $5 million for 15 projects in Michigan. The bill also includes $1 million for an assessment of undersea threats that could greatly impact the Great Lakes. The bill still needs to be approved by a House-Senate conference committee before given final approval by Congress and being sent to President Obama for his signature.

“At a time when Michigan communities are facing such difficult budget problems, this funding is critical to keep police on the streets and to make sure our first responders have the resources they need” said Stabenow.  “It also includes funding to help our youth, keep our highways safe, and to promote tourism and jobs in Michigan.”

“I am pleased this bill will bring such an array of projects improving public safety and boosting the economy to Michigan,” Levin said. “I’m particularly gratified that the Senate has funded the expansion of the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center at Thunder Bay which will enhance the preservation of the historic vessels in the area and improve local tourism.”
