Funds made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which passed earlier this year
WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Carl Levin (D-MI) announced today that Michigan has been awarded $4,543,475 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding through the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Emergency Food and Shelter program (EFSP). This funding will help supplement rent, mortgage and utility assistance programs and help feed and shelter homeless individuals. “Our local soup kitchens, food banks, and shelters provide critical assistance to families across our state,” said Stabenow. “I am pleased this recovery funding will help these organizations continue serving communities hardest-hit by the current economic recession.” “These federal dollars will provide a much-needed boost to food banks, shelters and other humanitarian organizations in Michigan that are stretched thin in these difficult economic times,” said Levin. “I am pleased that this economic recovery package funding has been allocated swiftly to help provide important services to families in need.” EFSP funds can be used for a broad range of services, including providing shelter, food distribution through food pantries and food banks, one-month assistance with rent, mortgage and utility payments to prevent evictions, and transition assistance from shelters to stable living conditions. Funds are targeted at communities most in need using a formula that weighs factors such as unemployment and poverty. Individual funding awards
