The Budget and Michigan For Michigan, the President’s Budget means lower taxes, better teachers and classrooms, and important investments in our roads, highways, and airports. It means more ways for our students to afford college. The Budget means expanded support for the families of our servicemembers. The President’s plan offers important support for states as they face very difficult choices, expanding resources for Medicaid and law enforcement. Senator Stabenow, Congressman Camp Announce CARP ACT in Senate Senator Stabenow and Congressman Camp announced the Senate introduction of the CARP ACT ( Close All Routes and Prevent Asian Carp Today). The bill would direct the Army Corps of Engineers to take immediate action to prevent the potential entry of Asian Carp into the Great Lakes. Recent samples of Asian Carp environmental DNA have demonstrated the invasive species’ progress toward the Great Lakes through the Mississippi River. Jobs Figures Show Recovery WorkingWe in Michigan know how hard this recession has hurt our economy. But national economic indicators are showing hopeful signs that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, passed earlier this year, is beginning to reverse those trends. The Senate will debate a comprehensive jobs bill early next year designed to keep those numbers moving in the right direction.
The Curious Case of Duty-Free Buttons Detroit, the "Arsenal of Democracy," retooled its factories during World War II and switched from making cars to making tanks, trucks, and aircraft for the war effort. Unfortunately, we were so successful that we quickly ran out of raw materials to keep up with the rapid clip on the assembly lines. So Congress took an unusual step, in 1942, of eliminating the import tariff on scrap metal, allowing Detroit to keep military equipment rolling off the line. Read more...
Stabenow Leads Effort to Extend Unemployment Insurance in Michigan Senator Stabenow today announced Senate passage of the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act of 2009, which she co-sponsored. The legislation will extend long-term unemployment benefits in Michigan by 20 weeks. This bill also provides tax refunds to businesses that have been hit by the economic recession, and extends and expands the successful first-time homebuyer tax credit. Read more...
